Introduction
Tell students they are going to research a global issue that affects people in a variety of ways. Present examples of some issues and varying perspectives of the people involved. Task
A conference of policy makers and leaders will soon meet to discuss X. Your task is to prepare a briefing for this group in which you outline all sides of the issue. Process
- Provide a short list of examples of global issues and have all learners look that them.
- Discuss the global issues; what they saw, what they liked. Use discussion notes to develop a vocabulary for talking about global issues.
- Provide a list of issues and have groups of learners divide up the task of looking at all of them and identifying common themes, attributes or threads. Scaffold this by providing a features chart to guide their reading and give them a place to retain and organize their findings (Quick Topic bulletin board).
- Debriefing the analysis as a class and redirect weak inferences from different groups.
- Form groups of students to create an analysis of a global issue of their choice. Scaffold this by providing handouts (a issue features chart, negotiation guideline worksheet, a presentation checklist, etc.)
Evaluation
Describe to the learners how their performance will be evaluated. Specify whether there will be a common grade for group work vs. individual grades. You may want to have separate rubrics for individual and group work.
