Introduction
[Begin with a compelling scenario that sets the stage for students to take on roles to investigate a relevant problem/issue. Identify the problem/issue, why it is important to deal with the problem/issue, and who the recommendation will be presented to.] Task
The task should have three stages:
- Research all sides of the problem/issue.
- Share research and reach a group concensus.
- Create and present the group recommendation according to the scenario.
Process
- Define the problem/issue. It should be socially significant and interesting to the students.
- Define the roles students will assume for their research.
- Identify information resources for each role. Each student conducts and documents research. Provide reception scaffold such as a graphic organizer that lists the URL, assesses its authority, and documents the relevant information.
- Define concensus building process, ground rules and expectations. Provide transformation scaffolding to help the group incorporate the interests of each role and make a meaningful recommendation.
- Students present individual positions to the group with appropriate evidence.
- Group develops a recommendation according to the consensus building process and creates a product to present their recommendation. Provide a production scaffold that helps the group clearly articulate their recommendation and how they reached it.
Evaluation
Describe to the learners how their performance will be evaluated. Specify whether there will be a common grade for group work vs. individual grades. You may want to have separate rubrics for individual and group work.
