Introduction

[This document should be written with the student as the intended audience. Write a short paragraph here to introduce the activity or lesson to the students using the following as a guide. Write this in a compelling way that will draw students into genuine engagement with the topic. Don't get so gushy that you lose credibility, though.]

Who/what was X? What is important to remember about it/him/her? How can you take this complicated person/institution/event and turn it into something that tells the story well?

[You may limit the task by specifying the form of the commemorative (stamp, coins, mural, monument) or leave it open.] I

Task

Imagine that your school/town/country has decided to develop some way to honor X. You've been assigned to a task force that will design an appropriate way to commemorate X. The sky is not the limit though. What you design has to [describe the constraints: budget, size, location, etc.]

In describing your design to others, you need to identify which aspects of X you are depicting. You should also list other important aspects of X that you were not able to represent and which should be conveyed in some other way.

Process

  1. The first step is to learn as much as you can about X. [Insert links and other resources here. Perhaps students can be broken into roles, each with the task of looking at a particular aspect of X.]
  2. Generate a list of aspects of X that are worth celebrating.
  3. Become familiar with some of the ways in which people/institutions/events have been honored in the past. [Insert links to other examples. Include a worksheet in the form of a features chart that will help them identify attributes of these other commemoratives.]
  4. Generate ideas for your design. [Provide guidance on brainstorming and working together]
  5. Decide on the best solution and develop your description of it.
  6. [Provide other details about how to describe their design: PowerPoint presentation? 3-D rendering? Written report? Model? etc.]

Evaluation

Describe to the learners how their performance will be evaluated. Specify whether there will be a common grade for group work vs. individual grades. You may want to have separate rubrics for individual and group work.

Conclusion

Put a few sentences here that summarize what they will have accomplished or learned by completing this activity or lesson.

You might also include some rhetorical questions or additional links to encourage them to extend their thinking into other content beyond this lesson. To foster the habit of lifelong learning, give them links to additional information here that they can pursue on their own.

List any books and other analog media that you used as information sources as well.

Include a link back to The WebQuest Page and the Design Patterns page so that others can acquire the latest version of this template and training materials.

You might want to include the following statement:
